Pinterest Basic Facts:

Pinterest is a kind of website, which deals with images only. So there are few concepts which should be known before using Pinterest.

 Boards:

If you are new on Pinterest, you will have to create a board. Before creating a board, think about the things you want to share with everyone and make a board accordingly. For example, if you love cooking then you might want to make a board named “Recipes I Love”. Many categories are available under which you can list your board, so virtually you can create any kind of board unless it is offensive content.

Board can be considered as set of Pins, which can contain images based on any topics.

Some ideas that might help you:

  • Stills you’ve taken on some country tour
  • Wish list
  • List of your favorites, e.g. movies, albums, books etc.
  • Favorite Recipes
  • Cars you like

Once you have created board, now you can start adding Pins into it right away. You can add “Pins” directly from your computer or you can add them from any website. If you wish to add images from any websites, Pinterest has created a “Bookmarklet”. You can drag the Bookmarklet into your bookmarks bar into your browser. You can add images from any third party website just by hitting this Bookmarklet, pretty simple, isn’t it? Upon hitting this Bookmarklet will automatically detect potential “Pins” from the webpage and add them to your account.

Description:

Once you have done adding Pins, it’s time to add some description and price to those Pins. You can add prices in dollars which will be shown on images and once you do this; your pins will also feature in “Gifts” section.

Share on other social networks:

You can also share your Pins and Boards on other social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter. For doing this, you will have to connect your Pinterest profile to your Facebook and Twitter account which can be done through settings page. You can also choose whether to share everything automatically on other websites or not and whether your profile can be searched by search engines.

Pinterest as Social Network:

Pinterest is just like any other social networking website present on the block and thus it can be used to enhance your contacts as well as build your audience. You can follow users; share your activity on other websites and so on. If any users you follow shares something, it will be displayed on your homepage (just like Facebook, isn’t it?).

You can even follow only some boards of your interest of any particular user; all you have to do is just go to their profile and either click on “Follow all” button situated beneath profile pic or you can click on any particular board and follow that board.

Want to follow all Facebook friends? You can do that simply by connecting your Facebook account to Pinterest. You can “like” the Pins as well as you can even “Repin” them to one of your boards.

Share videos on Pinterest:

Although Pinterest was designed keeping images in mind, in last August, Company added functionality to pin the videos. You can add videos just like any image on third party website. That means, you can add video from your computer, by pasting link or by pinning any video from other websites. You can add an image or video manually by clicking on “Add” button situated at in the top bar and then choosing “Add a Pin”.

Allow others to add to your boards:

Yes, you read that right. You can now allow others to add pins to your boards. For that, you will have to add users manually by providing their email IDs or Pinterest usernames. So you can work in teams while making the most of Pinterest.

Pinterest App on mobile:

You can now access Pinterest even while on the move. Download the official mobile application from Pinterest and use the website anywhere. You can do all the things using this application which you are doing from browser. You can add pins, repin, like other pins and so on. You can even share your stills taken from iPhone camera directly on Pinterest.

While iPhone users can use the said application to use Pinterest, Android users will have to wait as no official application is available for them. But they can use the website and all the functionality from mobile browser.

Grow with Pinterest:

Pinterest being a new website is bound to attract more users in upcoming months. So you can make use of this platform to grow along with the website itself. With just a flick of imagination, you can do much more than just sharing images and videos. For example,

  • Pinterest for showcasing products: Pinterest displays price tags on the images which mean you can turn this social media tool in your favor and built an online shop.
  • Display your own work: You can use Pinterest for showcasing your own art if you fall in the category of painter, designer, visual artist or photographer.
  • Pinterest as travel diary: You can add images on Pinterest while enjoying the tour so that later you can cherish those days just by looking at stills.

No doubt, Pinterest is following the footprints set by Facebook and Twitter. It depends on how you see it; you can make use of it to grow beyond your usual business tools or you can just use it for fun. Having received more than 11 million visitors alone in December, Pinterest is surely going to rule the upcoming year in the terms of online marketing.
