Raspberry Pi – A $25 Computer To Be Launched In January
It is a computer like no other. It may not provide you the ultimate performance but on other side, it will cost you only USD 25; but what it is? You must have heard about Raspberry Pi computer from several other websites. Although it did not make any official news in last year related to its arrival date, enough rumors were circling all over the internet. Finally it is the time, when world’s cheapest computer will make its public appearance.
It is a computer based on Linux operating system and will have power of ARM processor to back it. If you are thinking this is it? No there is more, it is equipped with HDMI out, USB, Audio and Video out slots and an SD card slot. Pretty cool, eh?
Believe it or not, the upcoming device named as Raspberry Pi will have all of the said features and is going to cost you amount less than your daily budget. The company has stated that this device will be made available in first month of next year, i.e. 2012 as little hardware and software testing is still remaining.
The device will hit the market in couple of variations, larger having more RAM and an Ethernet port will carry a tag of $35 (we’re certainly opting for this one!) while the lower version with 128MB RAM will cost you $25. The $25 version will not be carrying any Ethernet port.
Another board model was announced by company along with these two cheap yet cute computers, The Gertboard. This is a sort of expansion board which can be added later to any of these two versions of Raspberry Pi and will perform some fun stuff like “flashing LED’s on-off, run sensors, drive motors and some other fun tasks.
This project was a dream for David Braben, who is one of the creators of this project and also a game developer. In the video that was posted by Raspberry Pi creators showing beta board working, is decent enough to get attracted towards it. So with New Year is looming on us, Raspberry Pi has become the first company to announce such hilarious yet real project. Be sure this is just a showcase of what we all can expect from companies!
Oh and yes, this Raspberry Pi has got one cute, little Raspberry on it.
